Livingstone College
 Livingstone College makes its home in Salisbury, NC,
and the way it got there is truly
an interesting story. After being founded in 1879 in
Cabarrus County by a group of A.M.E. Zion ministers, the
college originally had to close its doors shortly
afterwards due to a lack of funding. However, the town
of Salisbury became a generous benefactor of the
college and in 1882, Livingstone was able to reopen its
doors in its new location of Salisbury, NC.
Livingstone College began as a religious institution,
and continues as such today. In an effort to educate
students on more than just a subject by subject level,
Livingstone has coined the phrase “The Total Learning
Environment” which combines religious, social, and
cultural aspects into the educational approach to teach
students to overcome obstacles and become
productive members of the global society we now live in.
Livingstone’s administrative staff hopes to develop the
whole person and a student who leaves with a yearning to
be a lifelong learner.
Livingstone is made up of four “divisions” or
departments that are responsible for their own programs
and students. These departments are called the Division
of Business, which houses Bachelor of Science degrees in
Accounting, Business Administration, and Computer
Information Systems; the Division of Education and
Social Work, responsible for a Bachelor of Arts degree
in Elementary Education, Bachelor of Science degrees in
Physical Education and Sports Management, and a Bachelor
of Social Work degree in Social Work; the Division of
Liberal Arts, which covers degrees in Criminal Justice,
English Liberal Arts, History, Music Liberal Arts, Music
Education, Political Science, Psychology, Religious
Studies, Sociology, and Theater Arts, as well as housing
some general education course requirements; and Division
of Mathematics and Sciences, the department in charge of
Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology, Chemistry,
Mathematics Liberal Arts, and Mathematics Teacher
Education. The extensive list of majors, in addition to
the holistic learning approach, make Livingstone College
an exciting prospect for an undergraduate education in
Salisbury, NC.
